UK premiere of South Africa commission.

On July 11th, in front of an audience of thousands at the International Musical Eisteddfod in Llangollen, the Only Kids Aloud chorus performed the new commissioned work by the composer Prof. Paul Mealor to celebrate 20 years of democracy in South Africa. An article about the event is here.

Grahame Davies provided the words for the first of the three movements of the piece. The other two movements were settings of poems by the Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore, (1861 – 1941) and the English poet William Ernest Henley (1849–1903).

The piece was performed as part of a programme of items by South African artists, including Cape Town Opera.

This was the UK premiere of the work. The world premiere was in Cape Town in April when the chorus performed two concerts in the Artscape Theatre Centre as part of the Africa-UK cultural season in order to mark 20 years since the end of apartheid and the establishment of democracy in South Africa.

At that event, Bryn Terfel joined the Only Kids Aloud Chorus in what was his first performance in South Africa.
