Poem for laying of foundation stone for Wales Millennium Centre

In January Grahame Davies was commissioned by the Wales Millennium Centre to accompany the foundation stone for the centre on a special journey from its quarry in north Wales to Cardiff. The aim was to use the means of transport used in the great days of Welsh industry - gravity train, horse-drawn cart, steam train and sailing ship. He left the Penrhyn quarry on the 15th, travelled to Porthmadog and then set sail in the wooden vessel the Vilma. Bad weather meant that the planned six-day journey to Cardiff wasn't possible, but modern technology was substituted for old and the final stage was completed by helicopter. Grahame wrote a daily diary for newspapers and the radio, and also produced some more literary work - a poem in Welsh and English - as well. He said he enjoyed the trip and was delighted to be involved in the project as he has been enthusiastic about Jonathan Adams's magnificent design for the Millennium Centre ever since he heard him describe it at an event in Cardiff four years ago. Here are some of the articles from: BBC Cymru'r Byd,BBC Wales News Online, and a long piece from Jan Morris from the New Statesman.
