Lecture in Lublin, Poland.

In October 2002, I had the pleasure of travelling to the historic city of Lublin in Poland for a conference on British Culture held in the Catholic University. There's actually a Celtic department at the university, and Welsh is taught there. You can read the full story of the visit here: I'm grateful to the British Council for their support of this visit, and particularly to the Welsh lecturer at the university, Aled Llion, for kindly taking care of all the arrangements. One of the pleasures of the trip was meeting the eminent historian Sir Norman Davies, who was on the same panel. And one of the amusing things was when a group of students turned up for my lecture thinking I was Sir Norman. Sadly, I had to tell them that although we shared the same surname we were at opposite ends of the academic hierarchy! It was good too to have the company of Professor M Wynn Thomas of Swansea, and of the poet David Greenslade and the German academic, Dr Sabine Heinz. If only I could speak German as well as she can speak Welsh!
