Winner of national poetry competition.

Grahame Davies won the first prize in the 2004 National Eisteddfod's competition for a "Poem of Praise to a Person or Place", competing with the pseudonym, 'Trethomas'. The poem, in sonnet form, was in memory of Margaret Payne of Merthyr Tydfil. The adjudicator, Prof. Derec Llwyd Morgan, wrote: "For an entire month after receiving these poems through the post, I let the best ones sink into my mind, and the one that took root most deeply of all was the creation of 'Trethomas', a sonnet of praise to Margaret Payne, which is clear and fluent in its wit, like very many of the sonnets of the English poet from Leeds, Tony Harrison. Its languge is so easy and direct...and the definition of the contrast between the speaker and the object so effortless that I cannot help but admire it."
