15/06/2006 Anthology to highlight work of refugees. Gwyl y Blaidd / Festival of the Wolf is an anthology of writing by refugees and asylum-seekers in Wales which has been co-edited by Grahame Davies, Tom Cheesman and Sylvie Hoffman. It is published jointly by Hafan Books and Parthian Books, and was launched at the Dylan Thomas Centre in Swansea on June 13. The book includes poems and stories in both English and Welsh written by asylum seekers and refugees from more than 20 different countries who are now living in Swansea, Cardiff and Newport. It also has excerpts from Welsh literature over the past 10 centuries, by and about refugees who came to Wales fleeing events such as the Irish Famine and the Nazi Holocaust. The book’s title comes from a poem by the Algerian journalist and prize-winning poet, Adel Guémar, who now lives in Swansea. His poem is about a massacre of over 500 civilians committed by the Algerian army in Algiers in 1988. The book is designed to be useful for teachers and students, and everybody interested in cultural diversity in Wales and immigration to Wales, past and present. |
